ART DECO

The term Art Deco came around in the 1920's after L'Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratisfs et Industriels Modernes which took place in Paris in 1925. Fine Art Deco furniture consisted of woods such as Caucasian burr walnut and Macassar ebony.

In the early days, this style of furniture was more affordable than traditional furniture. Materials like formica, bakelite, and plastics were used. The style looked abstract.

FUNCTIONALIST MODERN OR INTERNATIONAL MODERN

In the Netherlands and Germany in the 1920's, this form was very popular. Gerrit Rietveld was a well know designer to create this type of style and to contribute to this movement. He made red, yellow, and blue rectilinear, disjointed furniture.

Other well know contributors of this movement included the Bauhaus architects, which included Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer. Mies is famous for the Barcelona Chair which is still recognized today and he also was responsible for creating a number of buildings. Marcel Breuer created the Wassily chair in 1925. He was awarded six times from the American Institute of Architects for his architectural work.

DANISH MODERN

This type of furniture was closely related to the Arts and Crafts Movement. Danish Modern was made in England and Scandinavia. This furniture was likely to be made with light-colored woods. Finnish birch was a wood that was used by architect and designer, Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), who was part of this movement as well.

POST-WORLD WAR II

In this stlye, at times a lot of plastic was used. This furniture was made in Scandinavia, Italy, and the United States. Charles Eames, Saarinen, and Harry Bertoia were some of the best designers of this era.
